Help with too bright color
I have some yarn I bought from eBay that is a lot brighter than I had hoped for. I would like to make the colors less wild. Its a varigated yarn with blue, yellow, flamingo pink and wow orange. Its by Rio and color #10. If it were cotton I would plunge in and just bleach it when done in the washing machine or tea dye. I cut off a tiny bit of orange and let it sit over night in a glass of cold tea and nothing happened.

What do you think? How do I make it less glaring? I'm prepared for shrinkage. My plan is to knit, then dye and shrink.

I know how  to crochet, but I'm having a tendonitis and maybe carpal tunnal problem tha makes it very painful. I have a gazillion knitting looms and I just dug a knnitting maching out of my mom's attic. There are some very nice small gage knitting looms out there. My brother has a drill press and he made a gazzillion of them when he was between jobs for my mom and she shares.

I try to practice frugality by buying yarn fron Dollar Tree, yard sales, eBay, Smiley's webpage, and unknitting sweaters from the Goodwill.

HELP!
Does anyone know of an INEXPENSIVE acrylic yarn that is 4 ply, worsted, as soft as Carons Simply Soft, and comes in Hunter Orange, Christmas Green, and Royal Blue?  Have a pattern that calls for Red Heart Super Saver and there is NO WAY I am touching that stuff...

Yarn brand question
Has anyone here used TLC's Cotton yarn? I understand it has teh same cotton/acrylic content as Lion Brand's Cotton ease but is cheaper in price and has more variety of colors. I am wondering if anyone else has tried it so I can decide if I want to try some out

Order got here
My first order with Smiley's just arrived today. I got 26 skeins of yarn for under 30 bucks. I am very happy. I got the yard I needed for my Mom's cowls and some fingerless gloves for my whole family.

I split the shipping with a ncie woman who live down the street from me so it came out even less

Just wanted to give a Head's Up
Apparently Vanna White has a yarn coming out soon. She is bringing it out with Lion Brand and you can see it launch on DIY Network this Sunday at 9 pm Est. during the Inside the craft and Hobby show 2007. It shouls be hitting the stores soon after that.

I wonder how much it will be when it launches?

Giving Back
I ran across this website last night and thought it was a wonderful idea ... http://www.shawlministry.com/

I went to the Lion brand website and foudn out that they have a section of free patterns for prayer shawls. i thought I might make some for somewhere, not sure yet. Maybe a hospice in my area.  I thought I woudl share. I don't think they have to be very expensive to make and I like the idea of comforting someone, even if they never know it was me

I just thought I woudl share and if anyone was interested give them the site

I don't know if this really fits in here, but it's a way to see if a cheaper yarn is the same size as a more expensive yarn. I just learned this from Interweave Knits, so apologies to those for whom this is old news.

In Interweave's yarn descriptions, they list a statistic called "Wraps Per Inch" or WPI. The way I understand it, this is a measurement of how many times a given yarn can wrap around a ruler over a distance of one inch.

So if you find a pattern that calls for a prohibitively expensive yarn, find out that yarn's WPI and then see if your chosen substitute measures up!

NOTE: This is only good for helping determine which yarns might knit up at a similar gauge; you'll still have to watch your fiber content for stretch, drape, and memory.

Pattern Pricing
If you buy patterns, and I will admit I have bout 3 magazines and 1 book. Where do you find your best pattern deals? I tend to look around www.half.com  for book deals. I went to http://www.glampyreknits.com/ after making the better sweater she designed for Knitty Gritty. She has a book out that looks good and I foun it for 14 dollars instead of 22. I have not ordered it yet because  I am still trying to decide whether it is a good buy or not. I noticed she has some patterns for sale for download  but I am leery of that too.

What do you all think. What is the most you would pay for a pattern book and still feel like you are saving money?
